Meet The White Lil’ Kim
So Twitter is all atwitter because of the pics Lil’ Kim has posted on her Instagram:

Kim has changed a lot over the years. And her self-esteem issues aren’t new, she’s been very honest about her struggles with her perceived lack of looks and how that’s affected how she sees herself. From a Newsweek article back in 2000:
“I have low self-esteem and I always have,” she says. “Guys always cheated on me with women who were European-looking. You know, the long-hair type. Really beautiful women that left me thinking, ‘How I can I compete with that?’ Being a regular black girl wasn’t good enough.” And the implants? “That surgery was the most pain I’ve ever been in in my life,” says Kim. “But people made such a big deal about it. White women get them every day. It was to make me look the way I wanted to look. It’s my body.”
But this new look is even jarring for Lil Kim. I mean, she’s completely gotten rid of the brown skin and has gone all the way blonde with the hair. If it wasn’t on her Instagram I wouldn’t believe it was her.
She is a walking billboard for the horrors of colorism and what it can do to pretty black girls who just feel like they will never be good enough because of their skin color and features.
I’m not going to write an essay on colorism; much better than me have tackled that topic in great detail. I won’t bash Kim for her choices regarding her looks.
It is her body after all and I think she’s been bashed enough for her looks and her choices regarding her looks over the years. There’s no need for me to join that chorus.
I will say that I hope she’s happy. I hope this new face is everything she’s ever wanted and she can be happy with the woman she sees when she looks in the mirror each morning.
And most of all I hope she finds the peace and self-esteem she’s been searching for all these years. We all deserve to feel good about ourselves. Lil Kim is no different in that regard.
