Nicki Minaj an American Idol Judge?
From The Hollywood Reporter:
According to a source with close ties to the show, longtime rivals Coke and Pepsi are at war again — but not about market share, rather over hitmaker Nicki Minaj. The rapper and singer, whose colorful, cartoon-like style has made her among the most successful new acts of the past three years, is at the top of the list for the open seat on season 12 of Idol. But as the new face of Pepsi, an endorsement deal that includes commercials along with touring and album promo, Idol sponsor Coke is none too thrilled at the prospect. The leading soda company has been an Idol partner since season one, at a cost of $26 million per year, according to reports
From US Weekly:
“I’m not sure the deal is completely done yet, but yes, she is definitely doing it,” one insider reveals. “A few more slight things to sign off on but it is happening.”
A second source says the “Super Bass” rapper, 29, is “100% confirmed to judge American Idol.” Reps for FOX and Minaj had no comment when contacted by Us.
I understand from a ratings prospective why Nicki Minaj is an attractive addition to American Idol’s judging panel. She’s hugely successful with a rabid, young fan base. I could see the producers thinking the combination of Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey are a surefire ratings juggernut. With that said, Nicki Minaj has one of the most annoying voices on the planet and I’m wondering does she know enough about the industry to really offer constructive criticism to the AI hopefuls.
I know she’s in the industry, but does she know the industry or in this case talent. Can she be a good judge of talent, can she offer tips to help the hopefuls. I think after NOT having a Simon since Simon left, I really believe Mariah Carey will fill that role. I think the producers of AI were originally hoping Lopez would be the Diva she’s billed to be – but instead they got a feel good, don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings judge. Mariah however, well I think she’s going to be “real” as hell, and Simon-esque so where does that leave Nicki Minaj’s role on the panel, especially when the rumors are that it will be a four judge panel possibly including Keith Urban and Enrique Iglesias.
It’s definitely something to think about. Signing Mariah Carey definitely guaranteed I’d tune in for at last a few episodes…I mean it’s Mariah Carey. So we will wait for an official announcement and see how Nicki Minaj fits in the American Idol landscape.
